.raw / .nef

Wed May 14, 2008, 12:51 PM
Hey everyone,

I'd like to ask something about the .raw format

I've taken some shots in that format at the zoo but they do seem to get less colourful and trying to edit them in ps3 doesn't seem to really help....

Maybe someone has some golden tips on how to edit/process them? That would be really helpful!

And while I'm at it... is there someone who could make a css for me? If so I can send the design (made in photoshop) and he/she can get some prints in return :)

My first few .raw shots were a bit lacking in color when I finished when them, but they're getting getting the more I practice (geting lots of that lately, got to shoot my sister-no-quite-in-law's graduation!)

I'd say just stick with it, keep trying differnt combinations of things, always play with everything before making any final decisions.

As for the CSS, I do enjoy making it, but my version of making it is to take a pre-existing CSS template from DA, and fiddle with it until I have what I want.
I don't think it's worth it to shoot in RAW. I know many people would lynch me for saying this, but I also know many professional photographers who agree with me. It seems to me that many people only do it because "they're supposed to", because everyone tells them they have to shoot RAW or they aren't real photographers. Anyway, if you want to pursue it, I believe you should get a dedicated RAW editor. Many of them are free and your camera probably came with one (?)

I think the best way to get a CSS would be to set up a contest. Like "You have a month to make me a CSS, the best one wins two prints and the second best wins one print." Post it on the Projects forum and note :devdeviant-contests. That way you're sure to get several to choose from. Just remember to mention what kind of things (like pictures, colors, fonts) you'd like in it.

Haha ok.. I do hear a lot of negative stories about RAW because it is so much work... even a professional photographer said he only shoots in RAW when it's REALLY important....

And the idea about the contest is a really great idea! :D I might do that!

Thanks!

as far as I can gather, you only really need to shoot in .raw if you're intending to make prints (big prints) if not then there's no need... I have never bothered with it and I don't think I will. I find that the quality of the jpegs from my 400D is quite sufficient, as long as I'm on the right iso. The full size image is obviously less-than-crisp, but I'm resizing them all for the net anyway so... it doesn't matter. Unsharp mask does the job nicely :)

of course if you're looking to make professional high-quality prints then it might be worth looking into I guess.

I have no clue about the css, sorry :XD:
hope you're doing well !

Haha... I already got one of my photos printed on a 100 x 75 cm format (my neighbour at my parents owns an advertisement printing compagny...) and it looks really good... But I shouldn't go any bigger..

I'm doing very well... will send you a note somewhere soon ;)
